There are a number of different factors to look at when deciding on how many bridesmaid you should have in your wedding party. In a traditional and average-sized wedding, there will typically be 4-6 bridesmaids. This number will absolutely fluctuation based on your own wants & needs as a bride.
Whether you want no bridesmaids or as many as you can get, the most important part of a bridal party is to have these friends and family share this beautiful day with you.
We’ve put together a short quiz to help you get an idea of how many bridesmaids you should have in your wedding party.
How many people are you inviting to your wedding?
This number will vary based on countless different factors. According to the Brides American Wedding Study, most weddings have less than 200 guests, with the average being 167. Whether you’re having less than 100 or more than 200 guests, this number can help you decide how many bridesmaids / how big of a wedding party you can account for.
You can take our FREE quiz on “How many people should I invite to my wedding?” to get an estimate of how many guests you should have.
How many best friends do you have?
Traditionally, your best friends are often a part of your wedding party. Think about how many close friends you have that you’d want standing next to you on your big day. You can think about childhood best friends, recent best friends and even close friends that have seen your relationship grow since the beginning.
Do you want to include family (siblings, cousins, etc.) in your wedding party?
If you have any sisters, brothers or cousins that you’d want to include in your wedding party, this is something to take account of in addition to your closest non-family friends. You might also want to consider any close family on your spouse’s side that you might want to include in your bridal party.
What is your budget for your wedding day?
A budget is typically related to how many people you’re planning to invite, but doesn’t necessarily need to go hand-in-hand. If you have a smaller or larger budget, this could affect how many bridesmaids you might want to have. But also, if having a larger wedding party is important to you and your S.O., then you can prioritize this in your big day and budget.
How many people does your spouse want in their wedding party?
A good rule of thumb is to have the same amount of bridesmaids as there’ll be groomsmen. While it’s definitely not a requirement to have the same amount of people in one party versus the other, this could help be a deciding factor when thinking about who to ask to be a part of your big day.
As wedding trends change and morph, the need and want for a bridal party has changed and morphed with it. Nowadays, some brides opt out of having a bridal party. Some try to include all their close friends and family in their big day in one form or another. And some stick to the tradition of selecting 4-6 bridesmaids to stand with them on their wedding day.
