It can sometimes feel like there’s a day for everything, but we want to shine some light on a day where you can make a difference: National Nonprofit Day! Not that you need a reason to help your favorite charity, but on this day you can bring in all your friends and family to join in on giving back! Now you may be wondering: where do I begin? Look no further because Zazzle is here to help make the day Zamazing!
How Did the Day Start?
The day goes back to the 1800s when the United States Congress passed the Tariff Act on August 17th, 1875. This Act allowed charitable and non-profit organizations to be exempt from paying taxes. The day was made a national day in 2017 to celebrate the fantastic hard work and time that is put in by nonprofit organizations across the country.
Exciting Ways Promote the Day!
Online

Thankfully, in the digital era, new platforms and processes exist to assist charities in their campaigns. Online fundraising is easy, cost-effective, and reaches a massive audience, so if you’re a charitable organization looking for exciting new ways to raise funds, here’s how to go about it. You can advertise the great efforts that your nonprofit is making through a new Instagram trend or by creating Reels of the good work the charity is doing.
In-Person – Helping Out at Events
Every charity could always use more help at events, whether it’s a fundraiser or just an information session. Being there to lend a helping hand is a fantastic way to help out at this year’s functions. Even if you’re stuffing giveaway bags or handing out pamphlets you’re still making a difference.
Host a Fundraiser
This can be anything from a special dinner gala, movie night, silent auction, or a walkathon. The important thing is to wrap National Nonprofit Day into the theme of your event, and use the day to encourage everyone to give just a little more! Take your fundraiser to the next level with a selfie spot for guests to turn the event into a moment on their social media.
Shop at the Local Charity Store
Many charities also run a shop from donated items, so why not use the day to thrift a few things? If you find something that isn’t quite right, remember, you can always upgrade it with a little DIY!
Exhilarating Ways to Celebrate the Day
Thank Donors
Many charities survive off the kind donations that they receive throughout the year. This is a perfect opportunity to send out thank you cards or flyers with information on where their donations have been used. If you’re a dog charity, show pictures of the pups that have been helped, or if you build homes for the homeless, you can show what tools have been bought with people’s donations.
Special Acknowledgement to Volunteers
Everyone knows that volunteers help take the small duties off the list. On this day, let your volunteers know how much they mean to you. Celebrate your volunteers with thank you cards sent to them with custom messages, host a thank you event, spotlight volunteers on your social media, or provide a gift card so they can treat themselves to coffee or treat!
This is a perfect opportunity to share on social media the amazing work that your charity does. Use the day to advertise what makes your nonprofit unique and the change that you are making.

Hundreds of nonprofits deserve the limelight on Zazzle. Here are a few of the groups that have stores on Zazzle!

It’s the simple things in life that matter, so give her a bag of M&M’s and she’s happy. I’m currently trying to sell the idea of a “Zazzle School Spirit Store” for my son’s school.
It takes a lot of time every year for the parents who organize the bulk merchandise purchases, and I’ve personally never been able to attend the times they had the school spirit shop open. By the time I was able to see what they had, they were out of sizes – and for that matter, the sizes were really limited and far too large for little kids (a problem I’m noticing at summer camps as well) OR they were out of what we wanted to get, and didn’t have anything else really useful available.
I feel like if we were able to create a Zazzle shop with the school logo on the most popular items, and some extra “fun” items too, it would nearly run itself year after year, and still raise funds for the school.
