What’s the Theme of AAPI Month in 2024?
Each year, AAPI Month is guided by a theme that speaks to the community’s contributions and aspirations. For 2024, the theme is “Advancing Leaders Through Innovation.” This inspiring theme highlights the forward-thinking work and leadership of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in various fields, from technology and business to the arts and sciences. People both within the AAPI community and without are invited to acknowledge the innovative minds that are continually pushing boundaries in their sectors, paving the way for future generations!
Unique Ways to Mark AAPI Month
Now that you know what AAPI Month is – and specifically, how it will be celebrated in 2024 – then it’s time to get involved! Here are some fresh and exciting ways to honor Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month:
- Cultural Taste Tours – You could organize a food crawl or a virtual cook-along featuring dishes from different Asian cuisines. Explore the rich flavors of Vietnam, Korea, India, and more. Food is a wonderful gateway to understanding and appreciating a culture.
- Art and Film Festivals – Why not attend (or even host, if feasible) a screening or art exhibition that showcases Asian American and Pacific Islander artists and filmmakers? This is a fantastic way to lean into the narratives that shape this diverse community and to indulge in some inclusive art appreciation!
- Storytelling Sessions – Another interesting idea would be to ask people in the AAPI community to speak about their background and tell stories from their heritage. These can be powerful and deeply moving experiences that foster greater understanding and empathy among all those involved.
- Support Local Businesses – Make a conscious effort to shop in Asian-owned businesses in your area. Whether it’s a bookstore, a restaurant, or a hair salon, investing in the local community is a practical way to show your support.
- Educational Workshops and Talks – Engage with the past by attending or organizing workshops that explore the rich history and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Knowledge is power, and understanding history is key to building a more inclusive future.

My oba, Sasae moved to the United States from Okinawa, Japan. She knew no english, had no family here, and brought with her my mother as an infant. She became a US citizen and spent her life sharing her culture and dancing at Okinawan festivals. I hope that even though she has passed on, the culture of our heritage never fades.

Wu Zetian. As an entrepreneur, l’ve always been inspired by Wu Zetian, the only female emperor in Chinese history. Her courage to break the norms and rise to power in a male-dominated society resonates with me deeply. She was a visionary who wasn’t afraid to challenge the status quo, and her reign was marked by significant military, political, and economic achievements. This inspires me to push boundaries in my own field, to innovate, and to strive for excellence. Her story reminds me that with determination and resilience, one can overcome any obstacle. In my business, I aim to embody these qualities, constantly pushing myself to achieve more and to create products that are not only beautiful but also meaningful. Just as Wu Zetian left a lasting impact on China, I aspire to leave a lasting impact on my customers through my work. Her life and achievements serve as a powerful reminder of what one can accomplish with perseverance and a bold vision.
