Black History Month 2024

Black History Month is an annual commemoration in both the United States and Canada, dedicated to acknowledging and celebrating the remarkable contributions and achievements of Black Americans over the course of history.

Its origins trace back to February 1926 when historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History established “Negro History Week.” The observance was later expanded to a month-long celebration in 1976 by President Gerald Ford. The choice of February is symbolic, as it honors the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, both pivotal figures in the struggle for civil rights and equality for Black Americans.

The Importance of Black History Month

The significance of Black History Month lies in its capacity to shed light on the often-overlooked contributions and experiences of Black Americans in the United States. Black individuals have played crucial roles in diverse fields such as science, technology, medicine, education, politics, and the arts throughout history. This month serves as an important reminder that Black history is an integral part of American history.

Black History Month 2024 Theme

According to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), the Black History Month theme for 2024 is “African Americans and the Arts”. As stated by ASALH, “African American art is infused with African, Caribbean, and the Black American lived experiences.” This includes fields of visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression.
