If Every Coffee Drinker by RoseWrites Poster

The deadliest creature in the world is the lowly mosquito. In fact, mosquitoes kill over a million humans every year. It's shocking that they cause an estimated 300 and 500 million cases of malaria per year. Zika is another reason we need to work together to eradicate mosquitoes – and not just Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Independent researchers from Brazil, Canada, and China have confirmed that Culex mosquitoes are a worrisome vector of Zika. In fact, Dr. Fiona Hunter, Canadian medical entomologist, made this note to self: "No mosquito infection data supports Zika transmission by Aedes aegypti in Brazil." An estimated 1/3 of the world's population (2.6 billion people) are at risk of contracting Zika, which can have incapacitating or deadly consequences for people of all ages. After researching the most effective and eco-friendly ways to eradicate mosquitoes, I discovered studies that show mosquitoes are repelled by coffee and used coffee grounds kill mosquito larvae. I figured if every coffee drinker and coffee shop were to repurpose used coffee grounds, we could put a stop to thousands – perhaps millions – of mosquito-borne diseases (like malaria and Zika).
