Unfortunate though it may be, killing each other with science is a tradition that weaves a thread back through time immemorial, whether it's Napoleon's engineers prestressing the barrels of his cannons according to Laplace's differential equations or Archimedes hoping to incinerate the Persian fleet with a collection of mirrors inspired by the geometric optics of Euclid. Heck, some nerd-ape probably made the world's first better pointed stick after sketching out a prototype on the cave wall. And whether you are attracted to physics or are repelled by applied physics, there's no denying that the development of implosion may well represent some awesome (in either sense of the word) pinnacle of war science. The technique has become de rigueur in modern weapons; it permits smallification and increased yield, not to mention making possible the even-more-terrible hydrogen bomb. Perhaps someday we'll find some peaceable endeavor for humans to channel some of this antic competitive zeal into. Perhaps if humanity had a real space program...
