Iolite is the blue gemstone variety of the mineral cordierite. This stone is a "rose cut" gemstone. A rose cut is basically a faceted cabochon. This beautiful blue specimen has a number of inclusions that make it very unique. Iolite was also once called "water-sapphire" because of it's violet/blue color. Iolite is derives from the great "Ios" which means violet. The mineral is highly pleochroic and has 3 axis of color. The blue/violet axis, a colorless axis, and a straw yellow axis. This quality is why the Vikings carried crystals with them so they could use them to determine

Great price for a very nice product. Arrived a day early - unheard of these days. The outside gold area has a little more orange tone to it than shown in the picture. Great packing so product can't get damaged. I used the same packing to forward the clock to my brother and sister-on-law for the 50th wedding anniversary. Printing was just as expected - lovely!
