While receiving treatment at the Saint Paul-de-Mausole institution in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, in the year before his death in 1890, Vincent van Gogh created a series of paintings with iris themes, most notably Irises. Van Gogh started painting iris in the hospital garden less than a month after handing himself in to the asylum, in May 1889. The surroundings of nature had an impact on him. This composition lacks the same level of tension as his later works. He called it "the lightning conductor for my craziness" because he thought he could keep painting and keep from going nuts. Strong shapes, unusual angles, close-up views, and flat local color evoke Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints (not modeled according to the fall of light). The entire picture exudes a sense of sweetness and lightness. The iris are brilliant and lively when there is no gloom.
