"Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'" John 14:6 This picture came about because one of Full of Eyes’ monthly supporters asked for a rendition of the classic “bridge diagram” image. In this version I decided to make Christ himself (rather than the cross) the bridge in an attempt to highlight the personal nature both of Christ's sacrifice and our receiving Him as our Lord and Savior. Salvation is found not by coming to an impersonal cross, but to the living, vibrant, intimately near person of God in Jesus Christ. He is the way, truth, and life. God has come to us as a person, not merely a proposition, and if we would know Him, we must know Him as a person—chiefly through the propositions of scripture! In fact, Jesus goes so far as to say that eternal life is nothing else than this: to know God and to know Jesus Christ (John 17:3). I represented Christ as brilliantly white to highlight his holiness/deity, even as the wounds in his hands remind us of his humanity. He stands in the flames between man and God because—on the cross and for His Bride—He bore the wrath with which hell burns. Lastly, I made the wounds on his hands the “doors” to the bridge. If you look closely you can see someone entering in through the wound on the left of the image. I did this because it is “by His wounds that we are healed” (1 Peter 2:24) and because any true coming to Christ will also be an entrance into the fellowship of His suffering. Though we may not be called to suffer death, everyone who has received Christ will—in great or small ways—enter into a cruciform paradigm of life, faithfully suffering the varied self-denials of love with Him in this life, and being glorified with Him in the next (Romans 8:16–17).
