John Adams, was the first Vice President under George Washington and the second President (1797-1801). "Liberty once lost is lost forever" was written in a letter to his wife Abigail in 1775. John Adams was the father of John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United States. The elder Adams was the only president elected under the banner of the Federalist Party. He assisted Thomas Jefferson in drafting the Declaration of Independence in 1776, and was its primary advocate in the Congress.
