In the approach, the horse gathers momentum and energy by bringing its hind legs under its body. At takeoff, powerful hind leg muscles propel the horse upward, while the forelegs flex, and the neck extends forward to help achieve the correct trajectory over the jump. During flight, the horse is suspended in the air, and on landing, it absorbs the impact primarily with its forelegs before recovering its balance.
