Kalocsa Postcard

Cathedral of Our Lady, Kalocsa, Hungary The Cathedral of Kalocsa was founded as one of the earliest churches of Hungary, but the first and the second churches were almost completely destroyed. The first one was demolished to erect a bigger building and the second was destroyed during the Mongol invasion. The third church was abandoned during the Turkish wars. Only a few Catholics were left in Kalocsa and the Protestants started to use the Cathedral. After the liberation there was almost nothing left from the city. The remaining Protestants were expelled by the Catholics, the remaining Catholics were expelled by the Protestants and only a couple of people lived in the city. The abandoned church collapsed. This Baroque church was erected between 1728 and 1774. Most of the 18th century documents were lost and the name of the architect is uncertain. The church was designed by Andreas Mayerhoffer or Josef Emmanuel Fischer von Erlach or by somebody else. Part of the Baroque church burned down in the late 18th century. Today the church is painted a VERY pink color. It's the pinkest church I've ever seen.
