The kanji ‘‘Hen,’’ which means ‘‘change’’ in English, was selected out of to best represent the year 2008 by the Japan Kanji Aptitude Testing Foundation from a total of 111,208 entries. Of course 2008 was the year Barack Obama campaigned for change but this is Japan so it is more likely that they were referring to their own leader which changed twice during 2008.
