Harry Kellar began his stage career with the Infamous Davenport Brothers, whose spiritulist show ignited a fever for the religious movement across the nation. Enamored of J.N. Maskelyne's performances at London's Egyptian Theatre, Kellar opened an American version in Philadelphia and bought several of Maskelyne's illusions and automatons. Kellar retired in 1908, naming Thurston as his successor.
