King Orangutan Tom at Camp Leakey Postcard
Orangutan Tom, the current king at Camp Leakey, in Tanjung Puting National Park on the island of Borneo (Kalimantan, Indonesia). The big cheek pads are an indication of Tom's maturity and prowess. Tom's father is the late Kusasi, the orangutan who reigned for about 10 years.
The artist, Rebecca Reeder, is active in orangutan rescue and rehabilitation. She donates all profits from the sale of this image to support orangutan conservation.
The documentary "From Orphan to King" tells that tale of Kusasi's life as an orphan, and Kusasi is the large male orangutan who grabs Julia Roberts on her visit to Camp Leakey in the 1990's. Some versions of Julia Robert's film have edited out the part where Ms. Roberts screams out, 'He's got me. He's got me." (Kusasi did her no harm.)
