Mototaka Kuroda, who served the Kodera family, a powerful Akamatsu clan with influence in western Harima, was adopted by his lord and took the Kodera surname. His son was Kanbei, later known as Yoshitaka (also known as Josui). As Nobunaga's campaign for national unification progressed to the Chugoku region, Himeji Castle was provided as a forward base for Hideyoshi. Himeji was originally under the care of Mototaka as a castle lord for the Kodera family. The 'Wisteria Tomoe' crest, later known as 'Kuroda Fuji Tomoe', also originated from the Kodera family.
