About This Design
La Pasionaria Freedom Fighter Poster Print
This striking sculpture pays homage to freedom fighter Dolores Ibarruri, the Spanish Civil War heroine known as `La Pasionaria’ (The Passion Flower). Made of fibre glass, it stands on the banks of the River Clyde in Glasgow, Scotland, UK, Europe and pays tribute to La Pasionaria and to the 2100 British volunteers who went to war against fascism in the 1930s. Of the 534 volunteers who were killed, 65 of them were from Glasgow. The poster features her famous quote “Better to die on your feet than live on your knees.” La Pasionara is shown standing defiantly with both arms raised to the heavens. Another great quote of Ibarruri, particularly relevant today, is: 'I shall die on my feet here, watching the stars. I know that the stars when I vanish will remain fixed, immutable, gazing on the absurd hustle and bustle of men, small and ridiculous, striving with each other during the sole second of life allotted them to learn and to know about themselves, wasting it stupidly, killing one another, the ones fighting to avert exploitation by the others.' This quote is from Andrés Sorel’s biography of Ibarruri, titled 'Dolores Ibarruri, Passionaria. Memoria Humana.' The sculpture of La Pasionaria is by Arthur Dooley of Liverpool (1929 -1994).
