Large Carpenter Ant Waving Hello Postcard

Well of course the ant isn't really waving hello ... she's cleaning her antennae. But ain't she cute? Carpenter ants can be found anywhere there's wood, so that covers a broad area. Could be wooden porch railings, wood walls, dead trees, deadwood or any other source. Ants chew the wood into sawdust to make elaborate systems of tunnels and chambers. Unlike termites, they don't eat the wood. Carpenter ants have a strict heirarchy and caste system. Different ants of different sizes have different duties to perform - attending the queen, foraging, caring for the larvae, and so on. The larger ants are soldier ants wo have big nasty mandibles that can give you a sharp nip. They guard the nest, the smaller workers, and the paths to food, prepared for aggressive action if necessary. The ant in this picture is very large so she's probably a soldier.
