The Dordogne region in southwestern France is home to some of the world's most remarkable prehistoric rock art, dating back over 17,000 years. These ancient artworks, found in caves such as Lascaux, Font-de-Gaume, and Rouffignac, provide a glimpse into the lives and beliefs of early humans. Font-de-Gaume is one of the few sites where original polychrome (multi-colored) paintings can still be seen, featuring bison, mammoths, and reindeer. Rouffignac Cave, also known as the "Cave of a Hundred Mammoths," contains an extensive series of engravings and drawings, many created with simple yet precise lines. These sites are part of the Vézère Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage area, which has one of the highest concentrations of Paleolithic art in the world.
