Launching of the Edmund Fitzgerald 1958 Coaster

Launching of the Edmund Fitzgerald 1958 Coaster

SS Edmund Fitzgerald (nicknamed "Mighty Fitz," "The Fitz," or "The Big Fitz") was an American Great Lakes freighter launched on June 8, 1958. Over 15,000 people attended the Fitzgerald's launch. The event was troublesome. When Mrs. Edmund Fitzgerald christened the boat by smashing a champagne bottle over the bow, it took her three swings to break the bottle. The launch was delayed 36 minutes while the shipyard crew struggled to release the keel blocks. Upon launching sideways into the water, the boat crashed violently into a dock.Although she had reported having some difficulties during a gale on Lake Superior, the Fitzgerald sank suddenly on November 10, 1975 in 530 feet of water without sending any distress signals. The precise cause of her sinking remains a mystery. All 29 on board were lost.

Beautiful horse drawing on this coaster makes it a great conversation piece. Artist is very talented! The printing Zazzle did is nice and crisp, but not as black as I would have liked and the edges had some execess on them But some sandpaper fixed the issue

Pleased with the overall quality of this type of coaster. I bought a set of these and each one was packaged carefully in bubble wrap to protect from breakage. The coasters are very classy looking and fun to use. I would recommend to anyone. Printing is less bright than on other products such as say, magnets or mugs, but that's to be expected given that they are printed on sandstone. Somewhat dull, but true to how the product is represented on the Zazzle website. I am pleased with the quality and would order again. Would make a great gift.
