Leaf cutters are most peoples favorite ant species. These ants are the largest and most complex of animal societies on Earth. There are around 50 different known species. It is typically thought that these ants eat the leaves they cut, they actually carry them back to their nest where they cultivate the leaves into a fungus which is used for food and antibiotics. They build vast underground nests which have central mounds that can reach 30 m width in only a few years. They may also have sub entrances as far as 80 m from the main nest. The nests are so large that they build their own ventilation systems to keep a constant flow of fresh air fresh.
