The left and right sides of the tomoe crest are not determined by the direction of the swirl, but rather by a rational name based on the diagram. Even a crest designer might get confused about the left and right sides of the tomoe, but they would recall a useful oral tradition. To determine the correct shape, they would first clench their left palm and look at their wrist, which would form the shape of the left tomoe.
