A scrawny man with a perpetually worried frown, Ichabod wasn't much to look at. Her true competition wasn't the scrawny schoolmaster, but Brom Bones, a childhood friend with a booming laugh and a darkness in his eyes that could curdle milk. Jack-o'-lanterns, carved with grotesque smiles, leered from windowsills, casting flickering shadows on the revelers.
