The scandal which followed the incident, raised French hatred of Marie Antoinette to a fever pitch. As Napoleon once commented- “The Queen’s death must be dated from the Diamond Necklace Trial”. The reputation of the totally innocent Queen, which was already tarnished by gossip, was ruined by the implication that she had participated in a crime to defraud the crown jewellers of the cost of a very expensive diamond necklace.
