I LOVE West Virginia. Mother grew up in a little town named Mullens where we would visit my Grandparents every summer. It was the Mayberry type of town where you'd sit on the front porch with your Grandfather (Daddy Ray). The house sat up a bit with a small front yard and stone fence .... and backed straight into a mountain. You'd speak to everyone walking by, and a lady down the street would also bring a yummy cake when we arrived. Mother grew up next to a family I never knew if we were relatives or just really close all our lives. The Father was a basketball legend in WV, and the sons and daughter all grew up to be extremely successful. One son is an international well known basketball coach and former player who was a major star in Italy and went on to successfully play for and coach (COACH OF THE YEAR!) several of the best NBA teams in the America such as New York, LA, Phoenix, and more I can't recall. I think you can't minimalize talent of course, but also the small town life of having little else to do but play basketball AND the encouragement of people watching over you. I had relatives in Richwood, Charleston, East Bank, and those were the years when children remember the Cherry River Festival as opposed to staying inside all summer playing video games .... or taking the cruises kids do now.
