Loke Kaʻilikea shirt

Loke Kaʻilikea was the first Kanaka Maoli (aboriginal Hawaiian) ancestor of the Marciel ʻOhana originating in Kaupō, Maui. On September 11th, 1897, she added her signature to the Kūʻē Petitions which forever defeated the treaty of annexation for the Hawaiian Islands in the U.S. Senate. The page containing her signature is captured on the back of this shirt. The Hui Aloha ʻĀina for Women, the Hui Aloha ʻĀina for Men, and the Hui Kālaiʻāina formed a coalition representing a majority of Kānaka Maoli. Their petitions protesting annexation, consisting of five hundred fifty-six pages, are now held in the U.S. National Archives in Washington D.C.
