make 2 washable fabric no sew orange photo frames
Make 2 small picture frames with this fat quarter of Zazzle fabric! This fat quarter has 10 panels of fabric laid out for each pumpkin orange photo frame, for making WASHABLE, NO SEW, FABRIC PICTURE FRAMES, for photo sizes 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" and 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" - wallet sized! AND - the smallest frame is a convertible frame, meaning you can take the strut leg pocket, that allows the frame to be tabletop, remove it from its velcro / hook & loop connections, and insert a stainless steel, bar pin back, that is removable! The back panel has velcro for the strut leg pocket at its top and a bottom right connection for the ribbon to be removed too, AND has 2 holes to hang the frame, as well as 2 vertical holes to allow for the pin back's mechanism to push through and stay in place! There is a pocket up front for the mat board OR cardboard easel back board, as well as the photo and its photo sleeve, a ACID FREE, CLEAR, SHEET PROTECTOR PAGE cut to the size of the photo! Velcro / hoko & loop is cut down & glued at the top inside between the inside front frame panel, called the 2nd inside frame front border, or 2nd Inside FFB, and the top facing frame middle panel or FM All of the fabric panels are labeled what they are, have seam allowances around the main panel parts to cut around, lines to cut along to cut away excess corner fabric, circles to indicate holes to be poked and cut out, areas marked for where to put the velcro / hook & loop - for both frames! Easel back and strut leg board patterns are ON the fabric, as well, just cut out, and transfer to mat board or cardboard. The holes on 3 of the 10 panels, for each frame, get 1/8" skinny ribbon thread through them, to connect all 3 panels, making the photo pocket. SUPPLIES NEEDED: THERMOWEB HEAT N BOND at least 1 yard x 17" wide, sold for $1.99 / yard at JoAnn Fabrics, in 1 yard pack at JoAnn, in a 5 yard roll 17" wide at Michaels or michaels.com for $8.99, make sure to use a 40% or 50% off coupon or sale to save money. It's also available at joann.com, Walmart.com Thermoweb Heat n Bond Lite OR Ultrahold - I use Ultrahold - it is acid free, perfect for this project, being that it's for photo. Heat n Bond is a paper backed, iron on, fabric glue fusbible web that gets ironed to the back of the fabric panels - it is used for your PATTERNS! Just take sheet protectors, 4 or 5, and trace over the whole panel pattern, including the seam allowance. Flip the sheet protector page pattern OR clear vinyl pattern, if you want, and transfer both the outer seam allowance line AND inner panel, onto the paper back side of the Heat n Bond. Use straight pins, poke through from the front, at all the corners, 4 corners on 6 panels, and 5 corners on the strut leg panels, flip the fabric over to the back, and center your Heat n Bond patterns, glue side down, between the pins. NOTE: For strut leg panels, make sure you trace over those 2 horizontal lines angled inside the strut leg Heat n Bond patterns. Then when you make the Heat n Bond strut leg panel patterns, cut away that center strip, BUT use it as a gauge to place the remaining top and bottom parts of the strut leg Heat n Bond patterns in place. That area where the center strip was removed will be clear of Heat n Bond, and will allow the strut leg pocket to BEND out, to pitch, for the frame to stand on a table or shelf! RIBBON: 2 lengths, 2 feet each by 1/8" wide for each frame, for connecting the 3 panels for the photo pocket 2 lengths, 9" long by 3/8" wide for each frame, for connecting the bottom right corners of the strut leg pocket, between the layers, and between the easel back, and frame middle panels, with velcro / hook & loop on the smallest frame MAT BOARD or cardboard at least a piece 6" x 4", can be bought at Michaels for $5 for 20x30" piece, 8x10" scrap for $1 at JoAnn Fabric superstores in the framing department, or AC Moore $8 for a 32x40" board - 1/16" thick hot glue sticks 15, low temp hot glue gun iron printer paper, ruler, pen or pencil paper scissors fabric scissors EMBROIDERY SCISSORS - IMPORTANT! $10 at Michaels or JoAnns, recommend Gingher brand - this will allow you to poke into those circles and cut out the holes on the 3 panels that make the photo pocket - do this AFTER you have ironed the Heat n Bond patterns to the back SHEET PROTECTOR PAGES - 50 pack, make sure the pack is labeled acid free, can be found at Walmart or Walgreens for under $4, $5 at Target STAINLESS STEEL METAL BAR STYLE PIN BACKS, PACKS OF 10, 44, 48 AT Michaels, michaels.com, AC Moore, under $4 per pack, use a store coupon or sale to save. 1 3/4" long each VELCRO / aka HOOK & LOOP white or gray, or black, 1 yard by 3/4" wide sold in JoAnn Fabrics for $1 in their notions area wall section or in their $1 bins - cut the width in half to 3/8" wide or if you can get it to 1/4" wide that's great, too, 1 1/2" long roughly - just cut a length 1 1/2" long, and cut down the middle horizontally, for both hook and loop parts, one set of strips for the photo pocket closure, the other for the attaching of the strut leg pocket to the easel back panel facing out. Then cut a square for both hook and loop 1/2" x 1/2" for joining the ribbon dangling out of the strut leg pocket to the easel back's right bottom corner, folded over twice. LEGEND: FRONT FFB: front frame front border, front of frame, with PW, or picture window - photo area, centered 2nd inside FFB: situated under front FFB, Heat n Bond ironed on side facing up, picture window inner edge hot glued to picture window edge of front FFB - has 7 holes for thread ribbon through, connecting it to the 2 FM or frame middle panels, making the photo pocket FM: frame middle, you get 2, inside facing, or TOP, and facing out, or BOTTOM - the 2nd inside FFB is connected to them on one side, the EB, or easel back panels are connected on the other side of them, for making the easel back board and pin back pocket EB: easel back panels, you get 2, one facing inside, the other facing out, with the strut leg pocket attached to it. Both panels have 4 holes to poke and cut out, using embroidery scissors -2 for hanging the frame at the top and vertical sides centered, and 2 vertical holes, for the pin back mechanisms to stay in place all outer edges of all finished, fabric and Heat n Bond fused panels, are joined along their outer edges, inside of course, with hot glue - EXCEPT, make sure that there is an opening up top, where the velcro / hook and loop is glued, for the opening for the photo and it's protective photo sleeve to slide in and out, AND an opening between the FM BOTTOM, and inside facing EB panel, for the slide out easel back board and pin back! Also, make sure that you leave an opening between the 2nd and 3rd strut leg panels on the left angled, lower part of the strut leg pocket for the slide out strut leg board! Otherwise, just hot glue all panel edges shut as gently and neatly as you can :D The fabric has pigment based ink, and the layout for this project was specifically for combed cotton, a natural fiber. Of course, there is a dying of white from greige goods, the source of how cotton starts when weaved before printing, but this makes the frame, along with the mat board, and acid free sheet protector, as close to acid free as you can get.
