Maru-ni-Uchiwa Watch

Maru-ni-Uchiwa Watch

There are three types of uchiwa fans. The first is a gunbai uchiwa, which is an elliptical shape, and the handle is either attached to the lower edge and extends to the upper edge, dividing the ellipse in two, or is not. The second is what we commonly use in the summer, typically made by splitting the upper part of a bamboo handle, spreading it out radially, and attaching paper or fabric to it. The shape can be circular, oval, or trapezoidal. The third type is a haneuchiwa, which has bird feathers attached to the tip of the handle. (From 'Japanese Crest Studies' by Raisuke Numata)
