From the designer’s private collection of religious ephemera. + The quote to the right of the image is the thirteenth stanza of the hymn Stabat Mater (“At the Cross Her Station Keeping”). The Stabat Mater is a long 13th-century Latin hymn or sequence to Mary set at the Crucifixion of her son Jesus Christ. In the original Latin, the text reads: “Fac me tecum pie flere, crucifixo condolere, donec ego vixero." The English text used here is from the traditional--albeit somewhat free--translation by Edward Caswall (1814-1878), a clergyman and hymn writer who converted to Catholicism from the Church of England and became an Oratorian priest.
