When I had the four math basic functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication & division) drilled daily into my head in "grammar" school, we were taught to work from the right to the left. He then brought the system to the United States c. 1977. With this method it is possible to display all numbers from 0 to 99 with two hands. But, for the more everyday need for ESTIMATING, let's look instead at the meaningful larger numbers. By concentrating on the values from the left, then to the right (as needed), in our heads we can get a more immediate approximate valuation of the number in front of us. That's why we talk about roughly $1 million, rather than $1,234,321. For, $200 thousand is closer to $1 million, rather than $2 million!
