The mer-baby seems to be quite a little fish! The mermaid style is quite Art Nouveau, which is French for New Art, popular between 1890 to 1910. Art Nouveau typically portrayed beautiful women with long hair, and inspired by natural forms such as plants and curved lines. About Vintage Mermaid Illustration We found this wonderful vintage mermaid illustration in an old picture book from 1896. The image was done in black and white - pen and ink, and was colorized. The image is typical of the era -- the Victorian people loved fantasy creatures, and mermaids were very interesting to them. They wrote quite a lot about mermaids and merbabies in their fantasy genre.
