Miss Lydia Nahiwa shirt

This picture of Lydia Nahiwa was taken shortly after her marriage to John Vieira Marciel, Sr. She was age 10 on September 11th, 1897, when her signature (incorrectly listing her as age 19) was placed on the Kūʻē Petitions that forever defeated the treaty of annexation for the Hawaiian Islands in the U.S. Senate. The page containing her signature is captured on the back of this shirt. The Hui Aloha ʻĀina for Women, the Hui Aloha ʻĀina for Men, and the Hui Kālaiʻāina formed a coalition representing a majority of Kānaka Maoli (aboriginal Hawaiians). Their petitions protesting annexation, consisting of five hundred fifty-six pages, are now held in the U.S. National Archives in Washington D.C.
