Mogao Caves Library Cave 17 China Postcard

Mogao Caves Library Cave 17 China Postcard

The Library Cave, formally known as Cave 17, is a small side chamber off the entrance corridor of Cave 16 within the massive Mogao Caves complex in Dunhuang. Discovered sealed in 1900 by the Taoist monk Wang Yuanlu, this modest cell originally served as a late 9th-century memorial cave for Hongbian, a high-ranking local Buddhist monk. Upon its opening, it revealed an astonishing, tightly packed hoard of tens of thousands of ancient manuscripts, silk paintings, and artifacts dating from the 4th to the 11th centuries, written in numerous languages including Chinese, Tibetan, and Sanskrit. Today, the cave is preserved with a peaceful, historic solemnity, featuring a famous stucco statue of the monk Hongbian seated in meditation against a painted mural backdrop of trees and an attendant. As a critical repository of the Silk Road's multicultural history, the discovery of Cave 17 single-handedly birthed the international field of Dunhuang studies. It remains a profound symbol of hidden knowledge, spiritual endurance, and the vibrant cross-cultural exchanges that flourished in the desert oasis of Gansu for centuries.

I joined Postcrossing a few months ago and wanted postcards to represent my state well. I found them on Zazzle. I purchased numerous cards and was impressed with all of them. Excellent! The colors are beautiful. The cards have the exact look I wanted. I couldn't be happier.
