The "Ungai-kyō" (云外镜) is a type of mirror that can reflect images from distant places, much like today's television or the crystal balls used by fortune-telling gypsies. It is considered a type of yokai (supernatural creature) known as a mirror yokai, formed through the transformation of a mirror over centuries. It is also known as the "mirror yokai." Some believe that the Ungai-kyō is a transformation of a tanuki yokai (a shape-shifting raccoon dog yokai) that, when its belly becomes swollen and emits a glowing light like a television screen, can freely show scenes from afar. Renowned yokai artist Toriyama Sekien noted that the Ungai-kyō is often mistaken for the "Kagamijirō" (照妖镜), a mirror capable of reflecting unseen yokai, as both mirrors have the ability to reveal peculiar faces. It is said that on the night of the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, if a crystal basin is filled with water and a mirror is placed flat on the water's surface, and if it reflects the appearance of a yokai, it indicates that a yokai resides within that mirror.
