A rainbow is created when light from the sun’s rays illuminates droplets of water in the Earth’s atmosphere. Raindrops act like a prism taking in white light and then refracting that light into separate bands of color. The result is a multi-colored circular arc or bow with a progression of colors from red to violet. The seven main colors of the rainbow are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Some other colors that may also be seen are pink, cyan, and purple. The resulting rainbow also includes colours of the spectrum that our eyes are unable to see.
