I teach, it works... put away the calculators and let them practice the old fashioned way. Math research says that if students don't learn their times tables by 3rd grade they may never learn them. It is such an important skill. Put one on each child's work desk. I teach Algebra to high schools students. Many of them still struggle with their multiplication tables. I smile when I observe students doing their work and glancing at the times tables. NO CALCULATORS in my classroom until the end of the year. They may not memorize the entire table but they do become familiar with common values such as 12 time 12 and 20 times 20. A great workaround to a problem that plagues math students across the country.
