Neck Tie - HeLa Cells (Henrietta Lacks)

Neck Tie - HeLa Cells (Henrietta Lacks)

The Story of Henrietta Lacks and her "immortality" has certainly been a research blessing Recently her story has sparked controversy regarding the legality and ones rights to ones body and cells, in this case. This great looking black based tie has great color stained microscopic images of the HeLa cells and can be you conversation starter, if you choose to disclose your tie's subject matter. Most may not even notice. To help your side of the conversation, read the Wikipedia history below to get your education started. From Wikipedia - A HeLa cell /ˈhiːlɑː/, also Hela or hela cell, is a cell type in an immortal cell line used in scientific research. It is the oldest and most commonly used human cell line.[1] The line was derived from cervical cancer cells taken on February 8, 1951[2] from Henrietta Lacks, a patient who died of her cancer on October 4, 1951. The cell line was found to be remarkably durable and prolific — which has led to it contaminating many other cell lines used in research.[3][4] The cells from Lacks' tumor were taken without her knowledge or consent by researcher George Gey, who found that they could be kept alive.[5] Before this, cells cultured from other cells would only survive for a few days. Scientists spent more time trying to keep the cells alive than performing actual research on them, but some cells from Lacks' tumor sample behaved differently from others. George Gey was able to isolate one specific cell, multiply it, and start a cell line. Gey named the sample HeLa, after the initial letters of Henrietta Lacks' name. They were the first human cells grown in a lab that were "immortal," meaning that they do not die after a few cell divisions, and they could be used for conducting many experiments. This represented an enormous boon to medical and biological research.[4]

The Pageant Tie is just what I wanted and everyone at church wants one. I have worn it several days now and each day more people come to me to see it and say how great it is. The printing is just as it should be. Each photo is clear and the color is great.

I bought this tie for a cosplay of Haruhi Fujioka for Halloween and anime conventions. It feels very nice and silky. It's my first tie ever, and I'm a pretty big fan since I always wanted a tie. It was longer than I expected it to be (quite a plus), but the purple stripe was also thinner than I expected it to be (a slight bit of a downer, but I don't mind too much). I had never used Zazzle before, but I am very impressed with the shipping time. I was looking for places to get a tie like this so last minute since the ties like this on Amazon were incompatible with Prime. Thus, I ended up here. I paid for express shipping, expected delivery October 30-31, and it arrived in the morning on the 30th. Very impressed. I might just use Zazzle again. The print job was okay. The colors were perfect, but as you can see in the pictures, the stripe was a little off-center, and there was a kink in the stripe around where it transitions from the wide end to the thin end. It should work perfectly for my cosplay, but it was a little too carelessly print to be a very professional tie.

This was such a hit! My brother was really excited to get it. The only thing he said was it was short -but he's 6'3" so it's hard for him to find ties that are long enough for him. Luckily, my other brother (who is the same height) managed to tie his tie so it fit, so he gave it to him. They both remarked on how much they like the ties and the material. Beautiful! Clear vibrant printing! The tie looks GREAT!
