The town of Nieuw Amsterdam (New Amsterdam) was founded in 1625 as a Dutch settlement on land purchased from local Indians on the southern tip of Manhattan Island. Over the next several several decades, Nieuw Amsterdam began to grow and thrive as a center for trade and shipping and was a valuable part of the Dutch Colony of New Netherland. In 1664 the town was seized by an English force led by James, Duke of York - brother of King Charles II of England - who would one day become King James II. Though the Dutch recovered the town briefly in 1673, it was ceded to England by treaty a year later and renamed "New York" by the English after its conqueror.
