Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks its pancreas, destroying the insulin-producing beta cells. If the patient is treated immediately with insulin either by injection and/or pump, there is a chance that the remaining beta cells be able to function and make small amounts of insulin.
