The Northern Cardinal, formerly known as Cardinal Grosbeak, in a common yet magnificent bird is primarily found in the United States, west of the Rocky Mountains. It is also found in southern Arizona and New Mexico as well as much of Mexico. The artwork was painted by French ornithologist, birder, naturalist and artist, John James Audubon. The Northern Cardinal is a common, yet beautiful bird throughout it's range, and is a favorite visitor to backyard birdfeeders.
