U.S. Olympian, Oregon track star and athlete upon whose feet Nike was founded, Steve Prefontaine ("Pre"), ran his way to victory and fame the only way he knew how: by giving his "art" (as he referred to running a race) his best. Every. Time. Adored by his fans, he was also the subject of severe negativity from multiple forms of opposition (which many will contend was due to his flagrant persona). During his fast and epic rise to victory and fame as a distance runner at Oregon University in the early 1970's, his competition's supporters, so inflamed by the unstoppable success of this running prodigy, began showing up to his track meets wearing plain white t-shirts with a logo of a stop sign that read "STOP PRE". So what did he do? Exactly what we'd expect and want Pre to do... After crossing the finish line the winner of yet another YUGE race, Pre jogged over to the stands and grabbed a "STOP PRE" shirt from a fan who was egging him on to take it as a momento. But he didn't stop there... He put the shirt on then commenced to take a victory lap in front of an enormous sold-out crowd of fans and foes. That was just Pre... While some viewed it as just another arrogant display by the larger-than-life athlete, those who understood him knew it was much more. You see, those who actually knew and loved Pre saw him for what he truly was: a fierce competitor with a love for his sport so enormous that he sincerely welcomed the idea of a challenger who could "STOP" him. But until that day came, Pre was going to have to settle for "egging" on his competition and critics until he was fairly-and-squarely outmatched. While the average person with some knowledge of Pre would say the only thing he loved was himself, to really know Pre was to know that far greater than his purported "narcissism" was his love for the sport in which he competed with unfettered heart. After that infamous display of confidence when Pre donned his opposition's moniker, that very symbol of "anti-Pre" sentiment became the official uniform of Pre fans everywhere. Almost 50 years later, runners and winners of all walks still seek out and proudly wear the "STOP PRE" shirt as an unmistakable challenge to anyone willing to toe-the-line against them and beat them in their chosen race. Many would even agree that adorning this symbol is a challenge to the opponent who is MOST capable of serving them a cold plate of defeat: them self. It may be decades later and we may be watching a different race, but upon close examination it is easy to see how similar in spirit and strength of conviction are Donald Trump and Steve Prefontaine. Both living embodiments of greatness in its purest form, Trump and Pre - through their uncompromising devotion to their ideas of victory - forever changed their sports…and "We The People" are forever changed as well. Confined to the sidelines of most of the greatest matches in history, we are - by mere knowledge of both Pre and Trump - invited by these champions to run in the "big race"...not just with them...but through them. The question is: will we, today, issue a worthy challenge to our contenders by openly declaring with the pure boldness of Steve Prefontaine that "Somebody may beat [us], but [they] are going to have to bleed to do it" by holding high the Battle Standard of our own movement, "STOP TRUMP"? Mr. Trump's movement powerfully communicated his intent to "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN." Then his (our) opponents started their own movement with #NEVERTRUMP. Now, the ball is on our side of the court and the game clock is winding down. But we're champions who will give nothing short of our best, ensuring that, come the finish line in November, we will emerge the victor. And one of the many ways in which we are going to do it is to "Think Like A Champion" by openly issuing our challenge to the competition (and, don't forget, to OURSELVES as well) to "STOP TRUMP". As we embark on the final lap of a race that will define the future of our nation, we would all do well to reflect upon and heed the greatest words of one of the greatest WINNERS (Pre) the world has ever known: "TO GIVE ANYTHING LESS THAN YOUR BEST IS TO SACRIFICE THE GIFT." #STOPTRUMP | The Movement
