Chronic conditions are conditions that, by definition, usually last for more than three months. Many times, these conditions and illnesses stick around for years or are permanent. While the person suffering from the illness may go through periods of "remission" or periods of time that they appear well, there is always the possibility of a "flare." A flare is a period of time in which the illness acts of where some or all symptoms act up and the illness becomes very apparent. Sometimes, the flares are temporary, sometimes they represent a "new normal" for the sufferer. Chronic illnesses are unpredictable and never allow the sufferer to forget their existence. Symptoms are often invisible, and many times can be debilitating (or close to it). Many chronic illnesses do not exist alone, either, meaning that many sufferers have more than one. Chronic illness sufferers really are warriors. Because symptoms are so unpredictable and debilitating, comfort becomes the primary concern when getting dressed as a chronic illness warrior, making this the universally recognized "official uniform."
