This crane is set on top of a bundle of paper strips called a tabane noshi, which were traditionally attached to gifts as an auspicious symbol. The artwork is for the cover of a soon to be published book on origami. The text reads akemashite omedetou, or the equivalent of Happy New Year! in Japanese!
