Original Boundaries of Maryland Postcard

Original Boundaries of Maryland Postcard

Lord Baltimore, after being ordered to leave Virginia due to his religious affiliation with the Catholic Church, returned to England and requested a charter for a portion of Virginia north of the Potomic for a colony. The colony was to be called Maryland inhonor of the queen, Henrietta Maria, or Mary. Before the charter was sealed, Lord Baltimore died (1632), and the territory was then granted to his son, Cecil Calvert, the Second Lord Baltimore. This grant extended from the Potomac to the fortieth parallel of latitude and from Delaware Bay westward to a north and south line running from the sources of the Potomic to the northern boundary. Lord Baltimore's colonists crossed the ocean in two ships, "The Ark" and "The Dove", landing in March in 1634 near the mouth of the Potomac River. (graphic circa 1850 or earlier. I joined Postcrossing a few months ago and wanted postcards to represent my state well. I found them on Zazzle. I purchased numerous cards and was impressed with all of them. Excellent! The colors are beautiful. The cards have the exact look I wanted. I couldn't be happier.
