( Kansas City Original Night Hawk Orchestra) ie. Coon-Sanders Original Nighthawk Orchestra was the first Kansas City jazz band to achieve national recognition. It was achieved by national radio broadcasts from the Muelbach Hotel in downtown Kansas City by radio station WDAF. It was founded in 1918, as the Coon-Sanders Novelty Orchestra, by drummer Carleton Coon and pianist Joe Sanders. They broadcast late at night between 11:30pm to 1:00am. Them and the listeners were known as Night Hawks. They established a fan club by 1924 and boasted 37,000 Night Hawk members. Fans were encouraged to send in requests for songs by letter, telephone, or telegram.
