The Paddle Steamer Ariel 1831
The painting depicts a paddle steamer off Perch Rock in the Mersey. The paddle steamer in the painting has always been thought to have been the "Ariel". There is also discussion about whether the painting is the PO steamer Ariel or not. The Ariel was a paddle steamer that continued to be the Dover packet until 1846. The Ariel arrived in Aspinwall on May 10 with treasure and passengers. The Ariel was captured by the Alabama in 1863
