The Grand Canyon of Texas - View of rock formations from a creek bed along the Lighthouse Trail. These rock units (Permian-Pliocene) make up the foundation of the Texas High Plains south of Amarillo, Texas. The canyon is 800 feet deep, 20 miles wide and about 120 miles long. The Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River is the headwaters of the Red River, a significant water resource. The Red River forms a geographic boundary between Texas and Oklahoma. Much of the infrastructure in the park was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corp from 1933 to 1937. Panorama and design by Geology Works.
