A Pancreas Momager is a strong, brave, loving, and resilient mother who manages her Type 1 diabetic (T1d) child’s pancreas. Her child makes little or no insulin at all due to an autoimmune disease that caused his or her body’s immune system to attack the insulin-producing beta cells in their pancreas. She treats his or her high blood glucose (BG) with insulin, either by injection or pump, and low BG with fast-acting carbs – and that is just the bare minimum requirements of managing this life-threatening disease. She most likely has exchanged a traditional career for this one where she is on-call and on-duty 24/7/365. Type 1 diabetes is relentless and every day is a different challenge on its own.
