Parrot of Paradise of Cuba, Psittacus Paradisi Large Clock
“Le Perroquet Jaune écaillé de rouge” is a striking ornithological illustration that captures both the elegance of parrots and the refined scientific artistry of the late 18th–early 19th century. Created by Jacques Barraband, the image reflects the meticulous attention to anatomical detail and vibrant coloration that defined natural history illustration during this period.
The parrot is depicted perched on a textured branch, its posture calm yet alert, emphasizing its intelligence and composure. Its plumage is predominantly a rich golden yellow, overlaid with delicate, scale-like red markings—hence the phrase “écaillé de rouge,” meaning “scaled with red.” These markings create a layered visual effect, suggesting depth and structure in the feathers. Subtle accents of grey on the wings and tail add contrast, while a small patch of deeper red near the wing joint enhances the composition’s balance.
The bird’s curved beak, rendered in soft greys, is robust and characteristic of parrots, designed for cracking seeds and nuts. Its eye is sharp and expressive, contributing to a lifelike presence despite the stylized medium. The fine linework and controlled shading demonstrate a fusion of scientific observation and artistic finesse, typical of works produced for natural history publications.
This illustration likely originates from a collection dedicated to cataloging parrot species, combining taxonomy with visual documentation. Beyond its scientific value, the artwork stands as a testament to an era when exploration and illustration were central to understanding biodiversity, offering both aesthetic beauty and educational insight into the avian world.

Great price for a very nice product. Arrived a day early - unheard of these days. The outside gold area has a little more orange tone to it than shown in the picture. Great packing so product can't get damaged. I used the same packing to forward the clock to my brother and sister-on-law for the 50th wedding anniversary. Printing was just as expected - lovely!

My 93- yr. old Dad has everything.....and now including a clock with pictures of him in action!
Was initially a bit difficult to size & position the pictures in each space, but the end product was worth the effort. He enjoyed it and it was definitely a unique way of memorializing good times in his life. Quality of print was good.
