Peacock on a Cherry Blossom Tree, Ohara Koson Bath Towel
Ohara Koson (1877 - 1945) was a Japanese painter and printmaker of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, part of the shin-hanga ("new prints") movement.
He was born Ohara Matao; it is thought that he started training in painting and design at the Ishikawa Prefecture Technical School in 1889–1893. He also studied painting with Suzuki Kason (1860 – 1919), although accounts differ on whether this happened during his school years or after he moved to Tokyo in the middle to late 1890s.
In Tokyo, he produced some woodblock triptychs illustrating episodes of the Russo-Japanese War, but most of his production was prints of animals (kachō-ga). He worked at first with publishers Akiyama Buemon (Kokkeidō) and Matsuki Heikichi (Daikokuya), signing his work Koson. Starting around 1926, he became associated with the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō, and signed his work Shōson. He also worked with the publisher Kawaguchi, signing his works Hōson.
Through his association with Watanabe, Ohara's work was exhibited abroad, and his prints sold well, particularly in the United States. He was active designing prints until at least 1935, and died at his home in Tokyo in 1945. Quote:Wikipedia

The towel is great! Back and front are made differently. Front is like plush, it still wipes out moist very well which in my opinion is rare. The quality is perfect! The metallic colors are not visible after printing. Design is very close to the original. I thought that colors will be stronger as on the image but they are not, which is also good.
Two of the pics look yellowish because of the lighting in my bathroom. You can see how it looks in real on the third one.

I ordered these towels because I am getting ready to stage my house for sale and wanted some really pretty towels to show off the bathroom. These are an absolutely perfect match for the teal walls and I could not be more pleased. Not only do they look beautiful, they also seem to be very good quality. They are different than any other towels I've had, as the surface fibers are not looped. I love that because I have never liked how most towels have loops that snag and pull no matter how careful you are. I pre-washed them and they came out beautifully. The towels are generously sized and they don't feel flimsy at all. I did not read the description well enough to understand I was paying as much as I was paying for just exactly what was pictured: not a set of two, but a single towel, hand towel and washcloth, so they are way more expensive than I thought (which was a lot, considering). However, I still love them enough that I went ahead and ordered a single additional bath towel so that I would have an actual set, but will need to buy a couple of solid color washcloths. Pricing is weird, because a single wash cloth is priced higher than a large bath towel?? Anyway, if you can afford them, these towels are fantastic. I would never pay this much except to show off a house for sale, but now that I've done it I will love them in my new home as well. Gorgeous! Vibrant Colors and exactly as pictured,..maybe evern better!
